It’s ‘The End’ for monthly club night Only After Dark ... but don’t worry, it’s not the last one, it’s now moved to the former Bar Academy, now re-named ‘The End’.
The successful monthly club night is based on the Bowie nights and the Rum Runner/Blitz Club nights of the late 70s/early 80s. Starting it’s life back in 2009 David Wright launched the iconic night in a back room of a small pub in Shirley and went on to the now closed music venue ‘The Sound Bar’.

With the Sound Bar closed David quickly found a replacement venue at the fantastic Air Nightclub in Birmingham and had the final night in the Digbeth Nightclub on his 50th Birthday. A brilliant send off to the club night at its 2nd home with legendary DJ’s Rusty Egan and DJ Dick guesting.

On moving the night to 'The End' David said "When the Birmingham Ballroom (the former Carling Academy/Hummingbird) approached me with what they had to offer to Only After dark as a venue, I felt it was the right move. It is also run by people who have empathy for Only After Dark's concept, which was an important factor in the decision "

With a 200 capacity venue to fill just after the Christmas celebrations who would have guessed people would have to be turned away due to the venue reaching capacity on the night.

The venue filled within the first hour with guest DJ Sarah Soden playing tunes from the likes of John Fox, The Cult and Joy Division accompanied by photos on the giant video screens. Mr OAD himself, David Wright, started his set with ‘Computer Game’ by ‘Yellow Magic Orchestra’ and filled the dance floor with classics from Bowie, Human League and Duran Duran etc.

With David’s set finished at 2.30am, OAD Radio’s Paul Ryder finished the night off with his 'late session' letting the host relax a little and mingle with the guests, and to get feedback on the new venue. The electric atmosphere, smiling faces and a packed dance floor said it all ... simply brilliant!
